Best Western Cantebury Inn and Suites review.

After reading so many good reviews online about Best Western Cantebury Inn and Suites in Coralville I decided to book a room while visiting a friend. I booked an internet special rate through the hotel website. The rate was only $56 for a poolside room (sunday night) with 2 double beds. I was looking forward to the trip and felt I had gotten a good deal. Upon check-in I was underwhelmed by the lobby. There was quite a bit of construction going on and a room adjacent to the front desk was ';roped off'; with two pieces of caution tape in a big X across the large doorway. The floor was torn out and under repair. There was no fire in the fireplace that some other reviews had talked about. The front desk clerk was prompt with our check in and we were off to our room. We were on the far side of the hotel in a ';pool side room'; . When we reached the room and looked out of the sliding door that gave access to the pool we found we were down a short hallway from the actual pool area. The view out of that door was one of a rec area with a few arcade games, a vending machine, and a pop machine. The tile floor was torn out there also. My children wanted to swim so we changed clothes and left from our main door to go to the pool (so we wouldn%26#39;t have to leave our sliding glass door open since we couldn%26#39;t see our room from the pool.). The pool was quite cool but the children enjoyed it. We then warmed up in one of the two hot tubs in an adjacent atrium style room, the air was cold but the water in the hot tub was nice. I had the children wait at our sliding door and walked around to key myself into my room.. as I was walking in, so were my children through the sliding door that had not been locked. I tried to lock it and no luck.. the latching mechanism seemed to be broken or very tricky to figure out at the very least.. The deadbolt chain and wall mount for the main room door were ripped clean off the wall and setting on the tv stand ( I had not noticed this before). I went to start some bath water for my children and found that no towels had been left. I called front desk to request some and was told it might be awhile before he could bring some down. So thank goodness I had a beach towel from home..wrapped up and went down to the front desk to retrieve my own towels. After we had all bathed I called the front desk to make sure there wasn%26#39;t a ';trick'; to get the sliding door to lock. He said no and he might be able to send maintence to check it or we could switch rooms. At that point the kids were hungry and we decided to switch rooms so we could go to dinner. The room we were moved to was poolside and had a better view. Unfortunately we found out we were right below a party of preteen girls. There was only noise until 11pm when the pool closed but that is when I noticed a low loud droning noise. It sort of sounded like a Semi truck idle right outside the room. It must have been from the fans or exhaust system in the pool area. I awoke to the cheerful screams of kids in the pool at 7am . We did enjoy the breakfast served poolside. It was fresh and very good. As we were packing up we always check under the edge of the bed to make sure the comforter wasn%26#39;t hiding anything the children had dropped. Well. we found a Pacifier and needless to say it wasn%26#39;t ours. So of course I was a bit put off that the room hadn%26#39;t been cleaned around the bed edges (or where else?) I have to say, I am usualy not at all picky about hotel rooms.. older motels and hotels are fine with me as long as they are clean and in order. I guess we just stayed at a bad time with construction and several preteen parties going on.

Upon checkout the desk clerk did ask how the stay was, listened to my ordeal and apologized several times. I am not one to request refunds but neither did she offer any discounts for our troubles. Thank goodness the room was so cheap or I would have been quite a bit more frustrated at the experience.

IF... I would ever try this hotel again I would verify with the front desk that no construction was ongoing. I would check the rooms more closely, and I would request a room that wasn%26#39;t adjacent to the pool to save on the extra noise not only from kids having fun (which is fine) but from the loud exhaust or fan noise. The short walk from a non poolside room would be worth the peace and quiet.

We have stayed at that hotel for years, but it seems something has changed in the past couple of years. Namely, I wonder if it is under new management. The rooms are not as clean and the front desk staff are not nearly as professional. We likely will not go back there again.
