touring Kalona

My mother and I want a tour of Kalona and a possible overnight. Can two people tour or are tours only available for groups? She is very interested in the Amish and would love to have a meal in one of the B%26amp;B%26#39;s.

Here is information on the formal tours and home meals through the local tourism organization: http://www.kalonaiowa.org/byways/index.html. It looks like 6 is the minimum for the tour with the meal option, but it may be worth calling to see if you and your mother can be added to another interested group to meet the requirement. I hope that you%26#39;re able to make this work, because I had a home meal a number of years back and it was a great experience.

I imagine the tour group size requirements are more flexible without the meal. Even independently visiting the Stringtown grocery store north of Kalona (off Hwy. 1) will give you a perspective on the Amish lifestyle.

If you happen to be in the area the first weekend in June, try to catch the Mennonite Relief Sale at the Johnson Co. fairgrounds in Iowa City to see wonderful Amish and Mennonite made quilts and crafts, pies and breads, etc. - with all proceeds going to good causes.

Have a great trip!
